A Union County fugitive from justice has been arrested after spending a week on the lam, according to Lt. Daren Osborn with the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

James Paul Weaver, 36, of Plott Town Road, was wanted in connection with two counts of aggravated assault committed on July 6 against his girlfriend, in violation of Georgia’s Family Violence Act, according to Lt. Osborn.

At 8:30 the morning of Wednesday, July 13, UCSO deputies discovered Weaver sleeping in a tent on U.S. Forest Service property at Owltown Gap, according to Lt. Osborn.

The sheriff’s office considered Weaver to be armed and dangerous prior to his arrest, but he was arrested without incident, according to Lt. Osborn.

Authorities had been searching for Weaver since the evening of Wednesday, July 6, following a 911 call from the frantic victim, who was at the same Plott Town Road address at the time of the assault, according to Lt. Osborn.

“The lady was screaming and yelling that a man was breaking into her house, trying to kill her,” said Lt. Osborn. “Everybody converged to the area and arrived on the scene. What we found at the house was forced entry to the back door. We didn’t find the victim – she said she was running out the door trying to get away from him, and we lost contact through 911 with her.

“At that time, we focused on finding the victim. We had a couple deputies get down in Brasstown Creek, down there at the Towns/Union county line.”

Thanks to the hard work of several UCSO deputies, including K-9 Deputy Lacey, authorities were able to find the victim several hundred yards down the creek, according to Lt. Osborn.

The search continued for Weaver, but to no avail, until Wednesday, July 13.

Earlier in the day of the July 6 incident, it was determined that Weaver and the victim had been arguing before the situation turned violent, with the victim receiving a stab wound to the arm and several cuts, as the two wrestled for a knife being wielded by Weaver, according to Lt. Osborn.
