Two months after taking the State House of Representatives, District 8 Republican Primary, Matt Gurtler is on his way to Atlanta's State Capitol building in January with 60.9 percent of the vote in a run off election victory over Kent Woerner.

Gurtler gained 3,476 votes district-wide, while Woerner tallied 2,236.

In a contest between a pair of Rabun County residents, the race in Union County was no-contest after Gurtler garnered 75 percent of the ballots with 1,471 total votes to Woerner's 493.

Woerner, a former elementary school principal, was able to edge Gurtler by 61 votes in their home county but it wasn't enough to sway the remainder of the district which encompasses all of Union, Towns, and Rabun Counties, along with a portion of northern White County.

In Towns County, Gurtler received 726 votes (62 percent) and in White County, 154 votes (59 percent).

In the May 24th Primary, Gurtler was unable to obtain more than 50 percent of the required electorate to avoid a run off when he collected 35 percent to Woerner's 23 percent.

Gurtler will run unopposed in November for the District 8 seat vacated by Blairsville attorney Stephen Allison.
