of the North Georgia Mountains.
The
North Georgia News has been a vital part of the mountain
area since 1909, We are Union County's and North
Georgia's largest newspaper and serve as the legal
organ of Union county.
The North
Georgia news has won numerous awards in the past
five years from the National Newspaper Association,
the Georgia Press Association and the Georgia Sports
Writers Association. In addition, we have received
numerous recognitions from various organizations,
including local, state and national.
The North
Georgia News has the most complete coverage of Union County
in the northeast Georgia mountains. Our coverage
includes local news, state news which directly affect
the lives of our citizens, sports, business, government,
special events, schools, civic groups, religious
activities, charity organizations and recreation.
In addition,
we print announcements of births, engagements, weddings,
reunions, club meetings, youth organizations and
much more.
The North
Georgia News is very involved with community events
year round, including recreation events, school functions
and charity organizations. One of our endeavors is
sponsoring the annual Union County Day at Turner
Field, of which the proceeds benefit the Union County
Recreation Department which co-sponsors the event.
The North
Georgia News is printed once a week (with a Wednesday
dateline), 52 weeks each year.
Union
County has an altitude range from 1,800 to 4,784
feet above sea level. The county consists of 204,736
acres of land, of which 97,843 acres being part of
the Chattahoochee National Forest. There are four
mild and enjoyable season. Spring features the blossoming
of the flowering mountain laurel, wild azalea, dogwood
and rhododendron. Summer is the time for hiking,
horseback riding, golfing, water sports and other
forms of recreation. Autumn is a spectacular time
of the year when mountain forests reach heavenward
with gentle peaks and beautiful colors, Winter's
snow gives
the mountains and landscape a majestic picturesque
view.
Blairsville
is the county seat of Union County. The Romanesque
style courthouse on the square was built in 1899
and underwent major restoration in the past five
years, which included the replacement of the Clock
and Bell Tower and the restoration of the old courtroom.
The building features a museum on the ground floor.
One of the items in the museum is an old printing
press once owned by North Georgia News.
